Center for The First-Year Experience
The First-Year Experience program provides you with tools to ease your transition to college and pave the way to greater academic success. If you’re a new student, take advantage of these programs and classes designed specifically for you:
New Student Orientation
The College offers online orientation for all new students. Learn about academic programs offered at Aims, services for students, strategies for success in college, and important next steps in the enrollment process. Before classes begin, catch one of several find-your-classes tours available at all campuses.
Advanced Academic Achievement Classes (AAA 090)
The subject of these classes is SUCCESS… what success is and how to achieve it in college. You will be introduced to the culture of college to help make a smooth transition to life as an Aims student. You will identify strategies to negotiate the academic environment through a variety of activities and experiences. Reading textbooks with high comprehension, taking notes using effective systems, and test-taking strategies are the “name of the game” in these classes.
iFocus Workshops
The iFocus workshop series, offered through the fall and spring semesters on all campuses and online, will assist you in developing and achieving your educational, professional, and personal goals while attending Aims Community College. The four iFocus “tracks” were created to meet the needs of students in all areas of academic, leadership, career development, and technology. Popular workshops include: Unbaffling Biology, Microsoft Word Quickstart, Overcoming Test Phobia, Boost Your Brain Power, Stress-Proofing Yourself and many more!
Catalyst
Discover the marketable skills to take you from backpack to briefcase. Catalyst is a group of hard-working students who have been nominated for membership by faculty and advisors. Student members embrace the habits of professionalism, promote leadership, visibility, support, and college success.
7 Habits of Highly Effective College Students
In this workshop you will take an in-depth look at the habits and attitudes that influence your ability to a successful college student. You’ll become more self-aware in order to: take greater control of your life, prioritize and align the “Big Rocks” with your end goals, improve your relationships with new listening and conflict management skills, and remember the importance of self-renewal. Attend a 7 Habits workshop to learn about the habits that will make you an “A” student.
