Students are required to meet with a Faculty Advisor within the Medical Assisting/Phlebotomy department prior to registration approval.
Degrees/Certificates offered:
- Allied Health Professional (two-year A.A.S. degree)
Potential Opportunities: This program is a two-year program for individuals wanting a degree to enter the field in a clinical site as a medical assistant. Students are able to obtain a minimum of 3 certificates within the degree or may choose to obtain individual certificates.
- Medical Clinical Assistant (two-semester certificate)
- Medical Front Office Assistant (two-semester certificate)
- Phlebotomy (two-semester certificate)
**All 3 certificates have a Clinical Internship component the second semester where students are placed accordinly by the Instuctor for the courses. Students must have completed the first semester, a criminal background check, Urinalysis drug screen, have a current CPR card of Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association and be current on these required immunizations: Immunity to MMR, Varicella and Hep B, a current Tdap (less than 10 years old) and a current 2-step TB test or blood test. In addition, students may need a flue shot if the internship occurs during a Spring semester. Students are required to proved the instructor with copies of all immunixation verification
Medical Clinical Assistant : First semester students register for the following courses: HPR 101, HPR 178, MAP 139, MAP 140. Students must pass all of these courses with a 78% or higher to move on to the internship in the second semester. Second semester students register for MAP 280 (160 hour internship). Upon successful completion of the MCA certificate, students are eligible to appy and sit for the National Exam through NVVT to become Nationally Certified Medical Assistants (cost of examination is not covered in tuition). Medical clinical assistants can find employment in medical clincal office settings throughout the region and nationwide.
Medical Front Office Assistant: First semester students register for HPR 101, MAP 110 & MAP 120. Second semester students register for MOT 225 and MOT 181 (90 hour internship) Medical front office assistants can find employment in hospitals, physican offices, and other medically related patient point of service facilities.
Phlebotomy : First semester students register for HPR 112. Second semester students register for HPR 180 (120 hour internship). Phlebotomists can find employment in hopsital laboratories, physician offices, and other medically related patient point of service facilities.
